Bodoni - Miniature Design Rationale

Client: College Portfolio Recreate

This was a fictitious client. I believe the original project was to pick a font, write a short essay about it, and then incorporate the essay in a poster design.

Design Goals:

• Create a magazine cover for the font. This was chosen because Bodoni is commonly used on upscale magazines.

• Show case the modern and elegant feel of the font. Create for the upscale clientele that would read a magazine that features the font.

• Utilize the interesting design technique that was used in the original design, in a more subtle and elegant way.

Putting the second O in Bodoni behind the hair creates visual interest, draws focus to the model, and adds depth to the design. It's also a commonly used technique on magazine covers, lending it more legitimacy.

Utilizing the type as a highlight creates visual interest that is both clever and elegant. It is a more subtle version of the technique used on the old poster which lends itself to the modernity and upscale feel of the magazine.

The model's outfit and clothing were chosen to express the same feel of modern elegance. The photos mostly monochrome colours draw your eyes to the colour that is there, and the type that is used on the highlights. It is visually interesting while keeping the focus on the "brand" (the font). While that might not usually be the goal of magazine covers, this is a rare case where the model is not the feature.

This design rationale is an interesting exercise for me, as there is no real client. No real brand, no real goals. Despite that, I think the choices I made helped highlight the intentions of the font and showoff how it can be used. The cover is modern, eye-catching and bold.

Let me know what you think of this piece and this mini design rationale!
